A Night of Community and Celebration: The Inaugural Economics Honours Soiree

On Tuesday, March 31st, the Economic Students Association (ESA) hosted the inaugural Economics Honours Soiree in the Thomson House Ballroom. Aimed at combining academic celebration with professional networking, the event included speeches from CIBC and the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) as well as ESA and faculty members. The evening marked a cultural shift for the program, moving from a traditionally isolated and academically intense environment toward a community focused, collaborative culture. With over 50% of the Honours Economics cohort in attendance, the night featured a strong turnout from students, faculty, and teaching assistants.

The event aimed at addressing the fragmentation within the Honours Program caused by smaller class sizes and cohort isolation. Positioned to ease these hurdles, the soiree reinforced academic and social interactions and fostered mentorship between junior and senior students. Speeches from students over the evening highlighted the importance of peer networks beyond coursework, reframing classroom relationships as long-term professional and personal connections. Furthering emphasizing the theme of the evening was ESA Honours Representative Krishna Dewan’s speech expressed that “one word to describe Honours Economics should be ‘community’”.

            Among the evening’s events was the inaugural Honours program awards ceremony which aimed to recognize the amazing students, faculty, and TAs that have put so much into the program. The night’s focus shifted away from GPA toward resilience and rigor, emphasizing recipients’ contributions to both academic and social life. The awards were followed shortly by interactive games and informal networking throughout the evening with representatives from CIBC and MEI. The participation from external organizations bridged the gap between the academics and the workforce, highlighting the many prospective career pathways available to honours students.

The inaugural soiree represents a strengthening of the institutional culture within the program as it is reframed as both an academic challenge and a professional network. Looking forward from the event the program will see its U3’s graduating into roles at the Federal Reserve, global consulting programs and top graduate programs. The event leaves behind a stronger community infrastructure and sets a precedent for future ESA Honours initiatives.

Communauté et célébration : Le succès de la première Soirée des Honneurs en Économie

Le mardi 31 mars, l’Association des Étudiants en Économie (ESA) a inauguré sa Soirée des Honneurs à la salle de bal de la Maison Thomson. L’événement, qui mêlait célébration académique et réseautage, a réuni des représentants de la CIBC, de l’Institut économique de Montréal (IEDM), ainsi que des membres de la faculté et de l'ESA.

Cette soirée marque une rupture avec l’image traditionnelle du programme, souvent perçu comme un environnement de travail intense et solitaire. En rassemblant plus de la moitié de la cohorte, l’ESA a réussi à instaurer une culture de collaboration et d'entraide entre étudiants, professeurs et auxiliaires d'enseignement.

L'objectif était clair : briser l'isolement causé par la petite taille des classes et renforcer les liens sociaux. En encourageant le mentorat entre les anciens et les nouveaux, l'événement a transformé les relations de classe en un véritable réseau professionnel et personnel durable. Comme l'a souligné Krishna Dewan, délégué des étudiants en Honours à l'ESA, le mot « communauté » définit désormais mieux que tout autre ce parcours académique.

L'un des moments forts a été la remise de prix visant à récompenser l'implication de ceux qui font vivre le programme. Plutôt que de s'attarder uniquement sur les moyennes académiques, l'accent a été mis sur la résilience, la rigueur et la contribution à la vie sociale du département.

Grâce à des jeux interactifs et des moments d'échanges avec la CIBC et l'IEDM, les étudiants ont pu explorer les débouchés concrets de leurs études. Cette initiative renforce l'identité du programme, perçu non plus seulement comme un défi intellectuel, mais comme un puissant réseau professionnel.

L'avenir s'annonce d'ailleurs brillant pour les finissants de cette année, qui s'apprêtent à rejoindre la Réserve fédérale, de grands cabinets de conseil ou les meilleurs programmes de cycles supérieurs. Cette première édition pose les bases d'une communauté soudée et définit un nouveau standard pour les futurs projets de l'ESA.
